Baulking Lake - Embryo Angling

Baulking Lake is a mature, former ARC gravel pit located in the rural Oxfordshire countryside. Acquired by Embryo Angling in 2015, the venue has been developed into a premier, low-stock specimen carp water, embodying the organisation's core principles of protecting fisheries from predation while offering high-quality, secure angling. The lake itself spans approximately 13 acres and is characterised by its clear, alkaline water and a diverse, feature-rich topography. Its history as a gravel pit has left a legacy of underwater features, including prominent gravel bars, deeper holes, and silty gullies, providing a varied environment for both carp and anglers. The depths range significantly, from shallow marginal shelves of a few feet to deeper areas plunging to over 14 feet, demanding a thoughtful and adaptive approach from those who fish it.

The lake’s perimeter is lined with mature trees, reeds, and bankside vegetation, offering ample cover and creating a sense of seclusion in each of the 10 purpose-built swims. These swims are strategically placed to give anglers their own water, minimising interference and enhancing the angling experience. Two central islands act as primary features, creating natural patrol routes and holding areas for the carp. Substantial weed growth, particularly during the warmer months, presents a significant challenge but also a rich natural larder for the fish. Anglers adept at fishing in weedy conditions will find success. The clarity of the water often allows for stalking and observation, rewarding a mobile and stealthy approach. The stock is the main draw; a carefully selected number of carp were introduced in 2015, and these fish have shown exceptional growth rates in the rich environment.
