Willow Lake is an 18-acre gravel pit, carved from the earth during the gravel extraction boom in the Thames Valley. It is a venue steeped in carp fishing history, renowned not for the ease of its fishing, but for the quality and prestige of its inhabitants. The water is exceptionally clear, often described as 'gin-clear', a characteristic that both aids and hinders the angler. This clarity allows for precise visual assessment of underwater features and fish movement, but it also means that end tackle and line lay must be impeccably concealed. The lake bed is a complex tapestry of features typical of a mature gravel pit. Pronounced gravel bars, deep gullies, silty depressions, and hard plateaus are all present, demanding thorough feature-finding to unlock their secrets. However, the most dominant feature of Willow is its prolific weed growth. Dense beds of Canadian pondweed, milfoil, and silkweed flourish in the clear, nutrient-rich water, creating a challenging environment that dictates the angling approach for much of the year. Anglers must employ tactics to present baits in small clearings, on top of the weed, or use methods like solid bags and chod rigs to ensure effective presentation. The fish use these weed beds as a sanctuary and a natural larder, making them key areas to target. The stocking level is low, a deliberate policy to allow the carp to grow to their full potential. This is not a runs water; it is a campaign venue that tests an angler's patience, watercraft, and perseverance. Each capture is hard-earned and considered a significant achievement. The carp stock is old, with many fish exhibiting unique character, dark colours, and impressive scaling. The lake holds a notable number of carp over the 40lb barrier and a select few that have breached the 50lb mark, including the famous 'Box Common'. Success on Willow requires dedication. It attracts specimen hunters and campaign anglers who are willing to invest considerable time and effort to understand the lake's intricate nature and the patrol routes of its residents. It is a water that rewards observation, mobility, and a precise, thoughtful approach over simply casting out baits. The atmosphere is one of serious angling, shared by members who respect the venue and the prize fish it contains.
