Kents Bank, Clearwater Fisheries

Kents Bank is a mature, 20-acre gravel pit located within the Clearwater Fisheries complex in Carnforth, Lancashire. Excavated for gravel to construct the adjacent M6 motorway, the lake has been shaped by decades of naturalisation, resulting in a rich and challenging environment for the dedicated carp angler. Its topography is complex, a direct result of its industrial past. The lakebed is a varied underwater landscape featuring prominent gravel bars, deep gullies, expansive silt pockets, and raised plateaus. Depths are inconsistent, ranging from shallow 4ft marginal shelves to deeper holes plunging to 16ft, demanding a thorough approach with a marker rod or Deeper to unlock its secrets. Two large, established islands dominate the central water, creating natural patrol routes and holding areas for the resident carp. The margins are well-defined, with extensive reed beds providing cover and a valuable food source, particularly in the warmer months. These features, combined with seasonal weed beds, create a habitat where carp can thrive and grow to significant weights.

The lake is served by 18 purpose-built swims, strategically placed to offer anglers access to a variety of features. Access is excellent, with a hard-standing track running the perimeter of the lake, allowing members to park directly behind their chosen swim, simplifying the process of transporting equipment. The water is exceptionally clear for much of the year, a common trait of sand and gravel pits, which adds another layer of complexity to the angling. Stealth and presentation are paramount; the carp are educated and will spook easily from clumsy rig placement or excessive bankside disturbance.

The high stock density of approximately 30 carp per acre ensures that action is consistent for the thinking angler, but this is not a runs water in the traditional sense.
