Bantons Lake is a mature, six-acre specimen water situated within the Wyreside Lakes complex in Lancashire. It is regarded as one of the premier carp waters in the North West of England, holding a significant reputation for producing large, hard-fighting carp, including a number of fish exceeding the 40lb barrier. The lake was excavated in the 1980s and has since matured into a rich, natural environment, presenting a considerable but rewarding challenge to the dedicated carp angler.
The topography of Bantons is varied and complex, a key factor in its appeal. The lake bed is a mosaic of features, demanding a thoughtful approach from anglers. Depths range from shallow marginal shelves of around 4 feet to deeper holes and channels that drop to 12 feet. The main underwater features consist of large, pronounced gravel bars, deep silt channels, and firm clay spots. Locating these features is critical to success. A marker float or leading rod is an essential tool to map out a swim and identify feeding spots. The lake contains two prominent islands which are major fish-holding areas. The margins around both islands are prime patrol routes, and the channels between them act as natural funnels for cruising carp. Casting accurately to the island margins, particularly the overhanging trees and bushes, often produces bites.
The water is generally clear, allowing for observation of carp in the edge during warmer months, making stalking a viable and exciting tactic. Marginal features include established reed beds and overhanging trees which provide both cover and natural food larders for the fish. Anglers who neglect their margins do so at their peril. The lakeβs maturity means it is rich in natural food, including bloodworm, snails, and other invertebrates found in the silted areas. This abundance of naturals can make the fishing challenging; the carp are not always reliant on anglerβs bait. A successful approach often involves presenting high-quality boilies, either as single hookbaits or fished over a light scattering of matching freebies. Solid PVA bags are a popular and effective method for presenting a small parcel of attraction around the hookbait, especially when casting to firm spots amongst silt.
Bantons contains 10 purpose-built swims, nine singles and one double. The swims are well-spaced, providing each angler with a generous amount of water to fish. All swims are constructed from timber and covered with astro-turf, providing a stable and clean platform for bivvies and equipment. Due to the lake's reputation, it is a popular venue and pre-booking is essential. It is not a runs water; it is a specimen water where bites can be infrequent. Anglers should be prepared for blank sessions. However, the reward for patience and effort is the chance to catch some of the most sought-after carp in the region. The stock is predominantly made up of commons, many of which are old, dark, and powerful fish. The lake record is a common carp that has exceeded 45lbs. Bantons is a water for the thinking angler, the specimen hunter, and those willing to invest time and effort to outwit its prized residents.
