Kellet Lake at Clearwater Fisheries

Clearwater Fisheries

About This Venue

Kellet Lake is the primary specimen carp water at the Clearwater Fisheries complex in Lancashire. At 10 acres, it presents a significant but manageable challenge for anglers seeking large, well-conditioned carp. The lake was excavated and designed with carp angling in mind, resulting in a varied underwater topography that provides features for both fish and fishermen. The lake bed is predominantly clay, interspersed with gravel bars, silt pockets, and depressions. A large, centrally located island is the most dominant feature, heavily influencing how many of the swims are approached. The island's margins, shelves, and the deeper channels surrounding it are key patrol routes and holding areas for the resident carp.

Depths vary considerably, from shallow 4-foot margins and plateaus to deeper holes reaching down to 12 feet. This variation ensures that fish can be found at different levels of the water column throughout the year, rewarding anglers who adapt their approach to the conditions. The water is mature and rich, supporting a healthy ecosystem and promoting excellent growth rates in the carp stock.

There are 10 purpose-built swims, strategically positioned to give each angler a generous amount of water and access to multiple features. The swims are constructed from astroturf and timber, providing a clean, stable, and spacious base for bivvies and equipment. Several swims offer direct access to the island features, while others command open water or specific marginal spots. The design ensures minimal interference between anglers.

The stocking policy has focused on creating a high-quality specimen venue. The lake holds a large head of carp, estimated at over 400 individuals, ensuring a high probability of action. While it can be a "runs" water at times, the average size of the fish is impressive, with a substantial number of twenties and thirties present. The ultimate prize is one of the lake's growing number of 40lb+ specimens. The fish are known for their condition and fighting qualities. Tactics vary depending on the swim and time of year, but small, bright pop-ups over beds of high-quality boilie and particle are consistent producers. Solid PVA bags are also a favoured method for presenting a parcel of bait accurately on the gravel spots or in the siltier gullies. Watercraft is essential; observing fish movements and identifying feeding areas will significantly increase the chances of success.
