Karnforth Lake, often referred to as The Main Lake, is the centrepiece of the Clearwater Fisheries complex. This is a mature, windswept gravel pit spanning 35 acres, carved from the Lancashire landscape. It is not a runs water; it is a challenging venue that demands effort, watercraft, and a considered approach. Anglers who succeed here do so through diligence, not chance. The lake was excavated for gravel to construct the adjacent M6 motorway, which has resulted in a classic gravel pit topography. The bottom is a complex matrix of features, a varied underwater landscape that holds the key to consistent catches. Depths range from shallow 3-foot margins and bars to deeper 14-foot holes and gullies. The lake bed is predominantly clean gravel, with significant bars, plateaus, and humps breaking up the expanse. Between these gravel features are softer, silty deposit areas, which can be highly productive feeding zones, particularly when targeted with particle mixes or pellet.
The lakeβs layout is intricate, featuring seven islands of various sizes. These islands, along with the numerous bays and points, create a wealth of features to fish to. They offer underwater shelves, marginal cover, and patrol routes for the carp. Reed-lined margins and patches of lily pads in the calmer bays provide further cover and natural larders. Weed growth, including Canadian pondweed and silkweed, can be present during the warmer months, particularly in the shallower zones. This should be viewed not as a hindrance, but as a significant natural feature that provides oxygen, food, and sanctuary for the carp. Locating clean feeding spots on the edge of these weedbeds is a proven tactic.
There are 28 purpose-built swims, designed to give each angler a generous amount of water to command. The swims are constructed from stone and sleeper wood, providing stable, all-weather platforms. Most swims offer access to multiple features, from open water spots to island margins or underwater bars. Due to the lake's size and the often-prevailing westerly wind, a powerful cast or the use of a bait boat can be a distinct advantage for reaching certain areas. Watercraft is paramount. Time spent with a marker rod or Deeper is never wasted. Finding the subtle transitions from gravel to silt, or the small clear patches amongst low-lying weed, is what separates successful sessions from blank ones. The stock is not vast for the water's size, meaning the carp are nomadic. They will follow the wind and respond to angling pressure. Being mobile and willing to move onto showing fish is often the most effective strategy. Karnforth is a venue for the thinking angler, the specimen hunter, and the long-session carper prepared to work for their rewards. The fish are old, dark, and hard-fighting, a true prize for those who can unlock the lake's secrets.
