The Back Lake at East Delph Lakes is a mature, five-acre gravel pit sculpted for the discerning carp angler. It is not a runs water. It is a challenging environment designed to test watercraft and reward effort with specimen carp of significant size and pedigree. The lake was excavated in the 1960s and has since matured into a rich, natural ecosystem. The venue operates on a pre-booked, members-only syndicate basis, ensuring low angling pressure and a quiet, focused atmosphere. The membership is capped, and a waiting list is in effect, reflecting the lake's reputation.
The lake bed is a complex tapestry of features. Depths vary from shallow margins of 3-4 feet to deeper holes plunging to 12 feet. Prominent features include gravel bars, silt pockets, and plateaus which provide natural feeding areas for the carp. Anglers must invest time with a marker float or leading rod to map out these underwater contours, as precise bait placement is critical to success. The water is gin-clear for much of the year, making it ideal for stalking and close-quarter observation. However, this clarity also means that line concealment and rig presentation must be impeccable. The carp are old, wise, and have seen considerable angling pressure over the decades.
Weed growth is a significant factor. Dense beds of Canadian Pondweed and Silkweed flourish during the warmer months, providing both a challenge and a feature. These weed beds are the carp's larders, rich in natural food, and are prime patrol routes. Finding the clear spots within or on the edges of these beds is a consistently successful tactic. The presence of weed dictates the use of strong, reliable tackle and robust rigs. The margins are another key feature, with overhanging trees, reed-lined bays, and snaggy areas providing cover for the resident carp. Neglecting the margins is a common mistake; many of the lake's largest inhabitants are caught mere feet from the bank, especially during low light periods. The lake contains ten purpose-built swims, designed to offer ample water coverage and a degree of privacy. All are constructed from woodchip and are well-maintained. The low number of swims relative to the acreage ensures that anglers are never crowded. The environment is wild and untamed, with abundant wildlife. This is a venue for the angler who appreciates a natural setting and the pursuit of individual, memorable fish over high catch rates. Success requires patience, observation, and a methodical approach.
