Willow Lake Fishery

Willow Lake is a mature, five-acre gravel pit located in a secluded setting near Ashford, Kent. Excavated over four decades ago, its establishment as a dedicated carp fishery is more recent, reflecting a deliberate effort to create a specialised angling environment. The lake's topography is varied and presents a complex underwater landscape for the discerning angler. Depths range from shallow marginal shelves of approximately 3 feet to deeper central areas reaching down to 12 feet. This variation provides carp with diverse habitats throughout the seasons, from sun-warmed shallows to cooler, deeper water sanctuaries.

The lake bed is predominantly composed of gravel, interspersed with silt pockets and firmer clay patches. Anglers employing marker floats or leading techniques will identify numerous productive features. Key underwater structures include several prominent gravel bars and subtle gullies that act as natural patrol routes for the resident carp. These features are critical for bait placement and strategic rig presentation. The lake contains two primary islands, which are significant fish-holding areas. The margins of these islands, particularly the undercut banks and areas where overhanging foliage provides cover, are consistently productive. Anglers positioned to cast towards the islands must consider the prevailing wind and underwater tow to ensure accurate presentation.

In addition to the islands, the lake boasts extensive natural features. Established lily pad beds are present during the warmer months, offering carp shade, cover, and a source of natural food. Fishing close to the pads requires robust tackle and precision to avoid losses. The perimeter is lined with mature trees and overhanging bushes, creating a network of snaggy margins that are magnets for carp. Stalking in these areas can be highly effective for anglers who prioritise stealth. Reed beds are also present along sections of the bank, providing further cover and oxygenated water, making them prime targets, especially in spring and early summer.

The venue is designed for a maximum of eleven anglers, ensuring each has a generous water allocation. The swims are purpose-built, constructed from woodchip and revetted for stability and comfort. They are strategically placed to offer access to a range of features, from open water to island margins. The limited number of anglers maintains a low-pressure environment, contributing to the tranquil atmosphere of the fishery. The water is clear for a gravel pit, allowing for observation of fish in the margins under appropriate conditions. This clarity also means that line concealment and rig presentation are paramount to success. The lake is suited to anglers who are proficient in watercraft and capable of adapting their approach to the prevailing conditions and the movement of the fish.
