The Long Lake at the Darenth Fishing Complex is a water steeped in carp fishing history. Carved from a former gravel pit in the Darenth Valley, it is the premier specimen water on the complex, presenting a significant challenge to even the most experienced anglers. At approximately 14 acres, its rectangular shape is punctuated by two prominent islands, creating a multitude of underwater features and patrol routes.
The water is known for its exceptional clarity, a characteristic that makes it both a fascinating and a demanding venue. This clarity allows for direct observation of fish behaviour but also means that line concealment, rig presentation, and stealth are paramount to success. The lakebed is a classic gravel pit topography, a varied landscape of hard gravel bars, deep silt gullies, plateaus, and steep marginal shelves. Depths vary considerably, from shallow 3-4 foot margins and bars to depths exceeding 20 feet in the central channels. This variation requires a thoughtful approach with a marker rod or lead to precisely map out a swim and identify likely feeding spots.
The resident carp are old, wise, and have seen every tactic imaginable. They are a low-stock of originals and subsequent introductions, known for their size, power, and immaculate condition. The lake holds a reputation for producing some of the finest-looking common carp in the country, including a lake record that has surpassed the 50lb barrier. While the commons often steal the headlines, a healthy number of mirror carp are also present, with the largest specimens exceeding 40lb.
Fishing the Long Lake is not a 'runs water' experience; it is a campaign water where bites are earned through effort, watercraft, and application. Anglers often endure long, blank periods punctuated by moments of intense action. Successful tactics are varied and often depend on the time of year and conditions. In the clear water, Zigs can be exceptionally effective, particularly during warmer months. For bottom fishing, small, highly attractive hookbaits presented in solid PVA bags with a matching sprinkle of pellets are a consistent method for achieving the precise presentation required. Traditional boilie approaches, focusing on baiting small, clear spots on gravel bars or in silt pockets, also account for a significant number of captures. Due to the presence of nuisance species like crayfish, anglers must consider their bait choice and rig protection, often favouring harder hookbaits or artificials.
The swims are well-spaced, providing anglers with ample water to fish effectively. Access around the lake is via a natural path, and a barrow is essential. The venue is suited to the specimen hunter, the thinking angler who enjoys the process of unlocking a challenging water and is prepared to invest time and effort for the reward of a truly special carp.
