Kingswood Lake is a mature, 18-acre gravel pit located in the Kent countryside, renowned for its challenging nature and the high calibre of its carp stock. The venue is the premier water of the Ashford & District Angling Society and is steeped in carp fishing history, having previously been part of the esteemed Cemex Angling portfolio. Its reputation is built on a foundation of big, old, and wise carp that require considerable angling skill and watercraft to deceive. The lake is not a runs water; it is a serious campaign venue for dedicated specimen hunters.
The topography of the lake bed is complex and varied, a direct result of its gravel extraction origins. Depths range significantly from shallow marginal shelves of around 4-5 feet to deep holes and channels that plunge to over 20 feet. The main body of the lake is dominated by an intricate series of pronounced gravel bars, humps, and plateaus which the carp use as patrol routes. Between these hard gravel features are deep, silty gullies where natural food often collects. A prominent island is a key feature, with its margins and the surrounding channels being consistent fish-holding areas.
The water is typically clear, allowing for significant weed growth during the warmer months. Beds of Canadian pondweed and silkweed can be extensive, providing both a sanctuary and a natural larder for the carp. Anglers must adapt their tactics to contend with the weed, employing methods such as solid bags, chod rigs, or finding and fishing clear spots on the gravel. The margins are well-established, with overhanging trees, reed beds, and snaggy areas that offer cover for the carp, particularly in the quieter, less-pressured corners of the lake.
There are approximately 15 swims, each offering access to a variety of underwater features. The swims are natural and well-spaced to provide anglers with ample water. Access around the lake is via a natural path, and while generally good, a barrow is essential for transporting gear. The environment is tranquil and mature, surrounded by established woodland that provides a sense of seclusion. Due to its status as a premier club water, it is managed to preserve this challenging yet rewarding angling experience, rather than to provide easy fishing. Success at Kingswood is a significant achievement, earned through dedication, observation, and precise application of tactics.
