Basil is the flagship specimen carp lake at the Darenth Fishing Complex, a mature, 18-acre gravel pit located in the heart of Kent's Darenth Valley. Excavated several decades ago, the lake has evolved into a classic example of an English carp water, renowned for its significant stock of large, hard-fighting carp and its challenging, feature-rich environment. The venue is not a runs water; it is a destination for the dedicated angler seeking to target specimen fish, including a substantial head of carp exceeding the 30lb and 40lb mark, with several residents surpassing the 50lb barrier. The lake's character is defined by its clarity and topography. The bottom is a complex matrix of gravel bars, silty gullies, plateaus, and firm clay spots. Depths vary considerably, from shallow marginal shelves of 3-4 feet to deeper central areas dropping to over 14 feet, offering a diverse range of angling situations throughout the year. Two prominent islands provide significant features, creating patrol routes and holding areas for the carp. These, combined with extensive reed beds, overhanging trees, and patches of lily pads in the summer months, offer excellent targets for margin and feature fishing. The water can experience significant weed growth during warmer periods, primarily Canadian Pondweed and Silkweed. This presents a challenge but also a natural larder for the fish, concentrating them in specific areas and requiring anglers to adapt their tactics with strong tackle and proficient weed-fishing techniques. The lake has approximately 20 purpose-built swims, most of which are spacious and constructed from wood chippings or gravel, providing comfortable and stable platforms for long sessions. Many swims command their own distinct area of water, though some areas can be subject to angling pressure. Access to the swims is generally good via a perimeter track, but a barrow is essential. Basil is a venue that rewards effort and watercraft. Time spent with a marker rod or leading around is crucial to unlocking its secrets. The fish are known to be nomadic, following wind patterns and feeding heavily on natural food sources. Anglers who can locate fish and present baits effectively on the lake's varied features are the most successful. It is a demanding water that tests an angler's skill set, from casting accuracy to rig concealment and fish-playing ability, making the capture of one of its prized residents a significant achievement.
