Specimen 1 at A12 Lakes is a mature, 6-acre gravel pit located in the Essex countryside. Purpose-designed for the modern carp angler, it presents a challenge that is both rewarding and accessible. The lake was excavated and shaped to create a diverse underwater environment, a key factor in its popularity and the consistent growth of its fish.

The topography is a significant feature, with depths varying from a shallow 4 feet in the margins and on top of the bars, to a deep 14 feet in the central channels and silt pockets. Two prominent islands dominate the landscape, creating natural patrol routes and holding areas for the carp. These islands, along with numerous underwater features such as hard gravel bars, plateaus, and softer silt gullies, require a thoughtful approach.

The stocking policy on Specimen 1 is focused on producing large, impressive carp. The lake contains over 200 fish, creating a high-stock environment that ensures action is usually forthcoming. The average weight is impressive, with a very high proportion of the stock being over the 20lb mark. The lake is home to at least 20 different 30lb carp and a growing number of 40lb specimens, topped by the lake record, a mirror carp known as 'The Dalmation' which has exceeded 48lb.
