Little Hayes is a 4.5-acre lake situated within the Todber Manor Fisheries complex in Dorset. It is engineered and managed as a premier runs water, designed to provide consistent action for anglers of all abilities. The lake's primary characteristic is its high stock density, holding over 900 carp. This substantial population ensures that bites are frequent, making it an ideal venue for beginners seeking to build confidence, intermediate anglers looking to test new tactics or baits, and experienced hands who desire a high-action session.
The fish stock is predominantly composed of carp in the double-figure bracket, with a significant number of fish exceeding 20lbs. A good head of 30lb carp is also present, offering the chance of a larger specimen amidst the prolific action. The average weight of the carp is typically in the mid-double range, ensuring a satisfying fight from healthy, hard-fighting fish. The lake is roughly rectangular in shape, featuring a large central island that serves as the main structural element for both fish and anglers. This island is a key patrol route and holding area, with almost every swim commanding a section of its margin. The distance to the island varies, providing a range of casting targets.
The lakebed is predominantly clean clay and is relatively uniform in depth, averaging between 4 and 6 feet. This uniformity removes much of the complexity found on more intricate venues, allowing anglers to focus on bait application and rig presentation. There are no significant underwater bars, plateaus, or weed beds to contend with, making it a straightforward water to fish effectively. The key features are the island margins, the overhanging trees and reeds along the banks, and the open water zones.
With 16 purpose-built swims, the lake is well-appointed for multiple anglers without feeling crowded. The swims are constructed from wood chippings or gravel, providing a clean and stable base for setting up equipment. Access is a significant advantage, with a dedicated track running around the perimeter that allows anglers to park directly behind or very close to most of the pegs. This convenience makes it exceptionally easy to transport gear, which is a major draw for those on shorter sessions or with heavy equipment. Due to its prolific nature, popular tactics include solid PVA bags cast towards the island, small, bright pop-ups or wafters presented over a scattering of pellets or corn, and zig rigs fished in the open water, which can be devastatingly effective during warmer months. Little Hayes operates on an advanced booking system, and its reputation for consistent sport means that it is often busy, particularly at weekends.
