The Island Carp Lake at Furzebray is a flagship water in the South West of England, engineered for the discerning specimen carp angler. Established from a greenfield site, it has been meticulously sculpted and matured over two decades into a challenging yet rewarding venue. At 4.5 acres, the lake is intimate, demanding precision and watercraft rather than brute-force distance casting. Its defining features are two prominent islands which create a myriad of channels, bays, and strategic patrol routes for the carp.
The topography is complex and varied. The lake bed consists of clay, silt, and gravel, with depths ranging from shallow 3-foot marginal shelves, ideal for stalking, to a main body plunging to 14 feet. This variation in depth, combined with numerous underwater features such as bars, plateaus, and deep silty gullies, provides the carp with a rich and diverse habitat. The water is exceptionally clear for much of the year, a testament to the lake's health, but this also adds to the challenge, making stealth and presentation paramount. The margins are a key feature, heavily undercut in places and fringed with mature vegetation, offering prime feeding spots.
The limited number of swims—five strategically placed, wood-chipped emplacements for a maximum of four anglers—ensures that each angler has ample water and feels a sense of seclusion. This is not a runs water; it is a low-stock, big-fish venue where a single bite can be the reward for a well-executed plan. The resident carp are old, wise, and have seen significant angling pressure, requiring thought-out approaches with rigs and bait. The lake is managed to promote a natural environment, with an abundance of aquatic life. This ecosystem supports the growth of large, healthy carp, but also presents challenges such as crayfish, which anglers must factor into their tactics. Fishing the Island Lake is a campaign, a test of an angler's skill against a small number of large, sought-after carp in an environment designed to give the fish the advantage.
