Tockenham Reservoir, known locally as βTockyβ, is a 28-acre farm reservoir constructed in the 1970s. It presents a significant challenge for the dedicated carp angler. The venue is not a commercial water; it is a traditional, untamed reservoir that rewards effort, watercraft, and a long-term campaign approach. Its character is defined by its natural state, with overgrown margins, established reed beds, and an abundance of natural food. This environment has cultivated a stock of old, wise carp that have seen a variety of angling pressure over the decades.
The lake bed is a complex tapestry of features, a stark contrast to a uniform, man-made pit. Anglers employing a marker float or leading around will discover a wealth of underwater topography. Prominent features include large gravel bars, deep silt channels, and firm clay patches. These areas are key patrol routes and feeding spots. The depth is varied, ranging from shallow marginal shelves of 2-3 feet to deeper central areas dropping to around 15 feet. This variation allows for effective angling in all seasons, from zigs in the deeper water during summer to targeting the shallower bars in spring and autumn.
Weed growth can be significant during the warmer months, with Canadian Pondweed and Silkweed being prevalent. This presents both a challenge and an opportunity. Finding clear spots within or on the edge of the weed beds is a consistently successful tactic. The fish use the weed for cover and as a larder, and presenting a bait effectively in these zones is crucial. Tockenham is not a runs water. It is a venue for the thinking angler, the specimen hunter who appreciates the pursuit as much as the capture.
