Cuttle Mill is a mature, 28-acre gravel pit located in the Trent Valley, a region renowned for producing large carp. The lake's origins as a commercial gravel extraction site have endowed it with a complex and varied topography, which presents a significant challenge to anglers. The lake bed is a mosaic of features, demanding a thoughtful and precise approach. Depths range from shallow marginal shelves of 3-4 feet to deeper central areas plunging to over 12 feet. The key to success often lies in locating the subtle changes in depth and substrate.
Extensive gravel bars, some rising several feet from the lake bed, run throughout the venue, acting as natural patrol routes for the resident carp. Between these harder areas lie pockets of deep, nutrient-rich silt and clay, which are prime feeding spots, particularly during warmer months. The venue is characterised by its two large, established islands, which create natural boundaries and patrol routes, funnelling fish through channels and providing excellent holding areas. The margins are a mix of steep drop-offs and shallow, accessible shelves, often undercut and lined with overhanging trees and snaggy bushes. These areas should not be overlooked, as the large, wary carp are frequently caught close to the bank, especially during periods of low light or angling pressure. Weed growth can be significant during the summer, with beds of Canadian pondweed and silkweed providing both a food source and sanctuary for the fish. Anglers must adapt their tactics to present baits effectively in and around these weed beds. The water is generally clear, a testament to its rich, natural environment, which allows for effective stalking and observation when conditions permit. The swims are strategically placed around the perimeter, with 18 in total, ensuring anglers have ample water to fish without encroaching on one another. The mature, tree-lined banks provide cover and a sense of seclusion, contributing to the venue's reputation as a classic, challenging big-fish water. The environment is raw and untamed, a far cry from a heavily managed commercial fishery. It is a venue where watercraft, perseverance, and a deep understanding of carp behaviour are the primary tools for success.
