The Quarry at Baden Hall Fishery is a mature, 28-acre sand and gravel pit renowned as the complex's premier specimen carp water. Excavated decades ago, the lake has evolved into a diverse and feature-rich environment, presenting a significant but rewarding challenge for the dedicated carp angler. The water is exceptionally clear for most of the year, a characteristic trait of gravel pits, allowing for effective visual fishing and stalking tactics in the margins when conditions permit.
The topography of the lakebed is complex and varied, a direct result of its industrial past. Anglers will find a multitude of underwater features to target, including prominent gravel bars, some of which rise to within a few feet of the surface, expansive plateaus, sudden depth changes, and deep silt channels. The margins are often steeply sloped, dropping off quickly into deeper water, but there are also shallower, gravel-lined shelves that are productive, especially in warmer months. Several islands act as natural fish-holding features, with their surrounding margins and underwater shelves being consistent areas for bites.
The venue is not a runs water; it is a strategic angling challenge. The carp are old, wise, and have seen a variety of tactics. Success on The Quarry demands a thoughtful approach, encompassing effective watercraft, precise feature-finding, and well-presented rigs tailored to the clear water and educated fish. Both short-range margin work and long-range casting to distant bars or islands can be effective, depending on the swim and the time of year.
The lake’s stock is notable for its size and pedigree, containing a significant head of carp over 30lb, a good number of 40lb specimens, and a select few that have exceeded the 50lb barrier. The average size is impressive, making every capture a noteworthy event. The fish are known for their strong fighting qualities, utilising the deep water and underwater features to their advantage. The swims are strategically placed around the lake to provide each angler with a substantial amount of water. They are well-constructed, spacious, and many offer direct vehicle access or are a short barrow journey from the secure car parks. The environment is managed to maintain a natural, untamed feel while providing the necessary amenities for a comfortable long session. Due to its size and stock, The Quarry is best suited to the intermediate or experienced angler, particularly those engaged in campaign-style fishing or specimen hunting. It requires patience and skill, but the rewards—in the form of large, pristine carp from a classic gravel pit—are substantial.
