Drayton Reservoir, often just called 'Drayton' by those in the know, is a venue that holds an almost legendary status in the UK carp scene, particularly for its incredible stocking density and the action-packed sessions it provides. If you're looking to get a bend in your rod and test your gear against hard-fighting carp, this is the place to be. Built in the early 19th century as a feeder reservoir for the Grand Union Canal, it's a vast, open expanse of water that can be intimidating at first glance, but beneath the surface, itβs a hive of activity.
The venue's reputation was built on being one of the original 'runs waters'. In its heyday, stories of anglers landing over 50 fish in a 24-hour session were commonplace, and while it may have matured slightly since then, the action is still second to none. It is, without a doubt, one of the most prolific carp waters in the country. The sheer number of fish means that competition for bait is fierce, making them highly responsive to a well-presented baited spot. This makes it an ideal venue for anglers who are new to the sport and want to guarantee some action, as well as for experienced anglers looking to perfect tactics or simply have a busy, enjoyable session.
The fishing at Drayton is often about finding the fish and then building a swim. The carp are known to patrol in huge shoals, and when they move into your area, the action can be frantic. Spodding and Spombing are incredibly popular tactics here, as laying down a carpet of bait is often the key to holding a shoal in front of you. Particle mixes, pellets, and corn are all consistent winners. In terms of rigs, simple, strong, and effective is the way to go. Given the number of fish, you don't need anything overly complicated. Solid PVA bags, Method feeders, and simple bottom bait rigs all account for a huge number of captures. Zig rigs can also be a game-changer, especially during warmer months when the fish are cruising in the upper layers of the deep water.
The setting is that of a typical reservoir: large, open, and exposed to the elements. A strong wind can create a significant undertow and challenging conditions, so it's wise to come prepared for all weather. The swims are well-spaced, offering plenty of water to each angler. The far bank is inaccessible, leaving a huge, undisturbed area for the fish to hold up in, but they are rarely out of casting range. The dam wall is a particularly popular area, as it offers access to the deepest water in the lake and is a natural patrol route for the carp.
