The Main Lake at Catch 22 Fishery is a mature, 14-acre former gravel pit located in the Norfolk countryside. Its establishment as a significant carp water has seen it evolve into one of the region's premier specimen venues, holding a substantial stock of large, sought-after carp. The lake's character is defined by its rich variety of underwater features and clear, slightly weedy water, demanding a thoughtful and strategic approach from anglers. It is not a runs water; it is a venue for the dedicated angler seeking to target specific, large fish.
The topography is complex, a direct result of its gravel extraction history. Anglers will find a network of gravel bars, deep silt channels, firm clay spots, and raised plateaus. Depths vary significantly, from shallow 2-foot margins to holes dropping down to 14 feet, offering diverse fishing scenarios throughout the year. The lake features a large central island, which is a primary patrol route for the carp and a key feature for anglers in swims with access to it. This island, along with extensive reed beds and lily pads in certain areas, provides both natural cover for the fish and strategic targets for casting.
The water quality is high, supporting a healthy ecosystem. This clarity means that fish can be wary, placing an emphasis on stealth and well-presented rigs. Weed growth, primarily silkweed and Canadian pondweed, is present but managed. It is an integral part of the environment, providing natural larders for the carp, but requires anglers to adapt their tactics, often favouring drop-off lead systems or solid bag approaches.
The fishery has curated 14 specific swims, including three doubles, ensuring that anglers have ample water to fish without feeling crowded. Each swim is designed to command its own section of water and access multiple features. The stock is the main draw, with over 500 carp. The average size is impressive, and the lake is renowned for its head of thirties and forties, topped by a few genuine fifty-pound-plus specimens. These are old, wise fish that have seen a variety of angling pressure, making their capture a significant achievement.
The Main Lake is suited for the intermediate to advanced carp angler, the specimen hunter, and those willing to undertake a campaign. It rewards effort, watercraft, and precision. Success requires careful feature finding, baiting strategy, and patience. The tranquil setting, combined with the quality of the fish and the challenge they present, solidifies the Main Lake's reputation as a top-tier UK carp fishing destination.
