North Lake is part of the legendary Yateley West Park complex in Hampshire and holds a place in carp fishing history that few other waters can match. This atmospheric 10-acre gravel pit has been at the heart of the specimen carp scene since the 1970s, producing some of the most famous captures in the sport.
The lake is forever associated with Bazil, the King of the North Lake, one of the most iconic carp ever to swim in British waters. Bazils last capture came on 26th September 1998, when Steve Pagulatos landed the fish at 46lb 2oz. Another legendary resident was Murray, Yateleys largest living carp at over 51lb, who sadly passed away. These fish helped define an entire generation of carp anglers and cemented North Lakes place in angling folklore.
The lake has a long and storied stocking history, most famously in 1973 when six original Sutton Lake carp were transferred into North Lake during the Sutton drought (six more went into Car Park Lake). These fish, and successive generations grown on alongside them, formed the backbone of the legendary North Lake stock. The current population is a mix of mirrors and commons growing well, with fish still pushing into the forties and twenties and thirties making up the bulk of the stock.
North Lake is feature-rich, with several large islands, gravel bars, overhanging trees, and significant snaggy areas that make it a tactically demanding water. Lily pads, reeds, and extensive weed growth (including milfoil and Canadian pondweed) add further complexity, particularly during the summer months. The varied underwater topography rewards those who take the time to learn the lake.
This is a water for the dedicated campaign angler. It is not a runs water, and blank sessions are part of the experience. But the atmosphere, the history, and the quality of the fish make every bite truly special. For those who appreciate the heritage of carp fishing, a session on North Lake is a pilgrimage.
