Walthamstow Reservoir 3, known to anglers as the Lockwood, is a formidable expanse of water carved into the urban landscape of North-East London. Completed in 1903, it is one of the ten reservoirs that constitute the Walthamstow Reservoirs complex, a site that is both an operational part of London's water supply and a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). The Lockwood is a true reservoir in the traditional sense: a vast, concrete-bowled basin covering approximately 74 acres, designed for utility rather than aesthetics. Its character is defined by this stark, man-made construction. The banks are steep, uniform, and offer little in the way of natural cover. The water is deep, averaging around 25 feet, and can be exceptionally clear, particularly during colder months, allowing for depths of 15 feet or more to be visible from the bank.
Fishing the Lockwood is a test of watercraft, patience, and angling mechanics. It is not a runs water. It is a low-stock venue containing an old and wise stock of carp, including some of the most sought-after and historic fish in the capital. The fishing is often a long-range affair, with casts of over 100 yards being standard practice to reach productive zones. The lake bed, while seemingly featureless, is a subtle tapestry of silt, gravel, and clay. Locating the harder, cleaner gravel spots amongst the silt is paramount to success. These areas are often created by underwater currents and are natural feeding spots. A marker float is an essential tool, not for finding dramatic bars or humps, but for discerning these minute changes in the lakebed composition.
The main features are man-made. The iconic outlet tower on the western bank and the central island are significant patrol routes and holding areas for the carp. The water inlets and outlets, though often subtle, can also be fish-attracting magnets, particularly when they are operational. The sheer, concrete walls of the reservoir create a distinct marginal shelf that should not be overlooked. The carp, especially during low light or when angling pressure is high, will often patrol these underwater ledges. The challenge of the Lockwood is its scale. An angler can feel insignificant against the backdrop of such a large body of water. Wind direction plays a huge role; a strong, consistent wind can push the fish into one area, and being on the receiving end can be the difference between a blank session and a memorable capture. The fish are old, dark, and powerful, a mix of commons and mirrors that have seen it all. They demand a thoughtful approach, with rigs and baiting strategies tailored to outwit pressured, intelligent carp. It is a venue for the dedicated specimen hunter, the campaign angler who is willing to invest time and effort for the reward of a very special fish.
