Walthamstow Reservoir 1, also known as the Coppermill Stream Reservoir, is the oldest and smallest of the carp fishing lakes within the Walthamstow Reservoirs complex. Constructed in 1863, it is a Victorian-era clay-lined bowl, typical of London's water supply reservoirs. Its location within a major urban metropolis is unique, offering an angling experience juxtaposed against the backdrop of the city skyline. The venue is part of the larger Walthamstow Wetlands, a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a functioning nature reserve, which means the environment is managed with a focus on conservation and biodiversity. This results in a rich ecosystem but also brings challenges, such as a significant population of protected birdlife, including cormorants.
The lake itself spans approximately seven acres and is known for its considerable depth, plunging to over 25 feet in places with steep marginal shelves. The water is typically clear, a factor that contributes to its challenging nature. The topography is subtle, lacking the prominent gravel bars or islands found on many modern fisheries. Anglers must rely on meticulous feature-finding to locate silt pockets, harder clay spots, or slight variations in depth where fish may hold. Due to its age, the reservoir contains a low stock of historic carp. These are not modern, fast-growing strains but original, dark, and often uniquely scaled fish that have inhabited the water for decades. The jewel in the crown was the famed 'Coconut Common', a fish that exceeded 44lb and was a primary target for specimen hunters for many years.
Fishing on Reservoir 1 is a campaign-style endeavour. It is not a runs water. Success requires patience, watercraft, and a well-considered approach. Anglers targeting this water are typically experienced specimen hunters seeking a specific type of challenge and the reward of capturing a piece of carp fishing history. The low stock density means that bites are infrequent and hard-earned. The urban environment does not detract from the wild feel of the venue; the established reed beds and mature tree line provide a sense of seclusion. Access is excellent, with solid pathways and nearby parking, but the fishing itself is a test of angling skill and perseverance.
