Kingfisher Lake is a mature, six-acre former gravel pit located within the tranquil Chess Valley. Its defining characteristic is a large central island, which dictates the tactical approach for many of the lake's swims. The island's margins, overhanging trees, and underwater shelves provide significant features for carp to patrol and feed on. The lake was excavated decades ago, leaving a varied and interesting topography for anglers to explore. The bottom consists of a typical gravel-pit mix of clay, silt, and prominent gravel bars and seams. Depths are not uniform, ranging from shallow marginal shelves of three to four feet to deeper central channels and holes that drop to over ten feet. The average depth is approximately seven feet, offering suitable feeding areas for carp throughout the year.
The water is generally clear, allowing for stalking and surface fishing opportunities during warmer periods, particularly in the calmer, shallower bays. Aquatic vegetation is present but well-managed, consisting mainly of marginal reeds and lily pads in specific areas, rather than dense, problematic weed beds. This ensures that while there is natural cover for the fish, most areas of the lake remain presentable and fishable.
