Farlows Lake 1 is a mature 25-acre gravel pit located in the Colne Valley, a region central to the history of modern carp angling. The lake is widely regarded as one of the UK's most significant and challenging day-ticket carp fisheries, valued for both its history and the quality of its fish. The venue's heritage is intrinsically linked to its stock.
Lake 1 contains a lineage of original Colne Valley fish, descendants of the strain first introduced to the area decades ago. These historic carp are known for their dark colouration, unique scale patterns, and resilience, representing a direct link to the pioneering days of the sport. To supplement this original stock, a careful stocking program has introduced newer, fast-growing strains, creating a diverse and healthy population. The fishery is noted for its substantial number of carp exceeding 30lb and 40lb. Its most famous resident is the mirror carp known as The Gurm, a fish that has attained weights over 50lb.
The lake bed itself is a classic post-extraction gravel pit, offering a complex underwater environment. Key features include large gravel bars, deep silty troughs, and two main islands which create natural patrol routes and holding areas. Throughout the spring and summer, the lake experiences significant weed growth, primarily Canadian pondweed. This weed is fundamental to the lake's ecosystem, providing a rich natural larder and sanctuary for the carp.
Angling on Lake 1 is considered a technical challenge. Success requires a high degree of watercraft, particularly the ability to use a marker float or leading to locate productive, clear feeding spots amongst the gravel and weed features. Its combination of historic stock and a feature-rich environment ensures its status as a benchmark venue for serious carp anglers.
