Broom Lake is a mature, clear-water gravel pit located in Bedfordshire. The venue was excavated in the 1970s by RMC Angling and has since developed into a challenging and rewarding carp fishery. Acquired by Embryo Angling, it is now a secure, otter-fenced venue offering exclusive booking for anglers seeking a private and natural fishing experience. The lake itself spans approximately 8 acres and is characterised by its significant underwater features and varying depths. The clarity of the water is a defining feature, making it an excellent venue for stalking and close-quarter observation, but also demanding a stealthy approach from the angler.
The lakebed is a complex topography of gravel bars, plateaus, gullies, and silt pockets. Depths range from shallow marginal shelves of 3-4 feet to deeper areas plunging to over 14 feet. This variation provides diverse habitats for the carp throughout the year. One of the main challenges at Broom is the prolific weed growth during the warmer months. Dense beds of Canadian Pondweed and other native species provide a rich natural larder for the fish but require thoughtful angling tactics to present a bait effectively and safely land a hooked carp. Finding clear, presentable spots on the gravel or in the silt is key to success. Anglers proficient with a leading rod or a prodding stick will have a distinct advantage.
There are two prominent islands that serve as natural fish-holding features, with their surrounding margins and underwater shelves being prime patrol routes. The lake is fringed with mature trees and reed-lined banks, offering ample cover and creating a sense of seclusion in each of the seven designated swims. These swims are strategically placed to give each angler a significant area of water to command, minimising interference. The swims are natural and well-maintained, blending into the environment. Access around the lake is via a natural path, and a barrow is essential for transporting gear from the secure car park. The venue is not a 'runs water'; it presents a challenge that rewards effort, watercraft, and precise application of tactics. It is suited to the intermediate or experienced angler who enjoys the process of hunting and outwitting wary, mature carp in a rich, natural environment.
