Iktus Carp - France

Iktus Carp is a world-renowned angling destination located near Pau in the Pyrenees-Atlantiques region of southern France. The main carp lake is an 87-acre former gravel pit dating from the 1970s, with the dedicated carp fishing section opening in March 2008. Set against the stunning backdrop of the Pyrenees mountains, it is one of the most spectacular fishing venues in Europe.

The main lake holds an estimated 1,200 carp, with approximately 85% mirrors and 15% commons. The stock is truly exceptional, with around 300 fish weighing between 45lb and 55lb, over 25 fish between 55lb and 65lb, and more than 10 carp exceeding 65lb. The lake record stands at 74lb+, making it one of the top big-fish venues on the continent.

Beyond the carp, Iktus is famous for its separate Sturgeon Lake, which holds around 12 sturgeons with the biggest reaching 165lb+, catfish to over 260lb, and approximately 200 grass carp that grow to 65lb+. The sturgeon lake has 8 swims (numbered 16-23), while the main carp lake offers 15 swims with a maximum of 14 anglers fishing at any one time.

The underwater topography is varied, with depths ranging from 1 metre to 10 metres (approximately 3ft to 33ft). Extensive gravel bars and plateaus provide numerous features to target, and the relatively sparse weed growth makes it fishable throughout the season. Reeds line sections of the margins but the lake is generally open and suits long-range fishing tactics.

Facilities at Iktus are among the best of any carp fishing venue in France. On-site amenities include toilets, showers, a tackle shop, Wi-Fi, electric hook-ups, and food service. The fishery has been rated 9.5 out of 10 by Carpology magazine, reflecting the exceptional standard of both the fishing and the overall experience. Bookings are made on a weekly basis and advance reservation is essential.
